The Rahul Dravid conundrum

Rahul Dravid has not been amongst the runs. And today's effort ( 7 in 13 balls ) definitely did not help his cause. And he is India's most valuable player in the longer format of the game.

So here are my two cents.

Between the end of the Australia series and the start of the Ranji season, there is a gap of 16 days ( not including the Twenty20 thrashfest).

The Ranji Trophy begins November 3. The first two games that Karnataka play are

Sat 3 - Tue 6 Group A - Mumbai v Karnataka

Thu 15 - Sun 18 Group A - Karnataka v Himachal Pradesh

The first Test against Pakistan begins on November 22.

Dravid should skip the Pakistan ODI series and instead, make himself available for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy.

The break from the game coupled with time spent in the middle in the longer form of the game should do his batting a world of good.

And God knows we will need him to come good in India's next couple of campaigns and more!

Good suggest. (giggle)

That should help scrub off the rust he's gathered over the period of inactivity.

I hope he does.. the Pakistan and Australia seres are far too important for us :)

I hope we dont declare Dravid as finished commodity after just a failure in the ODI series. We really need patience with him and need to give him his own time to recover, and if playing Ranji gives him some time in the middle and the return of the intensity he is known for, then so be it.

His absence in Pak ODI series would give a chance to the likes f Badrinath and Sharma to test their mattle and they need to score big rather than the cameos. Also a chance to test Sehwag.

Ashu,

That is exactly my point.. The guy is way too important in the Test series and we play Pakistan, Australia and South Africa back to back to back.

If he is out of form, that leaves a huge gap in our middle order.

Dravid was the difference between India and Australia last time they were in Australia. Without McGrath and Warne, he batted beautifully, and Australia didn't look like getting him out. I don't think that India can afford him not to be at the top of his game, and as such, your suggestion is a very wise one.

Stuart,

Thanks :).

He is going to be pivotal to our fortunes Down Under and I hope he regains his touch sooner rather than later.

Cheers

very good suggestion, although i doubt such a short break will make a difference. many players have had breaks, during which they played domestic or county cricket, and came back stronger - hayden, ganguly, zaheer. it depends on how motivated dravid is at this stage.
