Goodbye to all that!

Shaun Pollock,Sachin Tendulkar, Praveen Amre, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jonty Rhodes.

And this is the team they come up with.

Luke Ronchi and Pinal Shah - two keepers in the same side. Ajinkya Rahane in and we open with Ronchi and Duminy. Rahane comes in at 8. Rohan Raje in the team but gets to bowl in the 16th over. Bravo bowls the one over, Dhawal has 2.

We did not lose the match because we batted badly. We lost the match because the collective thinking of the Mumbai Indians has gone to the dogs.

I mean, how dense does the bloody think tank have to be to come up with a solution like this?

The only thing left for Mumbai now is to play spoiler.. Get some other city ( besides Dilli ) to hate us with some passion for raining on their parade.

Disappointed!

Surely 5 in 5 and eazy doozy :) The main problem with MI is their captain - ST for all his batting genius is a dork as a captain.

While I can't for obvious reasons be a 100 % on this, pretty sure the team selection was his. You think PA/JR/SP/SJ would override the one and only ST ???

ST needs to swallow his pride and give the captaincy to SJ - he atleast had some success when he was captain of SL.

I can't fathom why MI aren't getting bad press like KKR - chokes - tick, horrible performances - tick, no one seemingly interested in playing - tick...

So then you looking forward to IPL III eh :)

Told ya weeks ago - MI will not and cannot win the IPL. While not quite out of it yet, it's pretty much done and dusted for them.

Whistle podu !!!!!!

lol TG.. Whistle podu indeed.. Captaincy changes will do zilch for Mumbai.. The collective thinking has gone out of the window. And in such circumstances, a change in captain will be akin to applying band aid to a open gash.

We can still do it, there is no reason to believe otherwise. Thing is, do we want to?

I am not sure if they have the batting to get through these matches. Abhishek Nayyar,Bravo,Pinal Shah, even Duminy all look so ordinary and ST is again burden with responsibility of carring the burden of an entire team. The only reason to support MI was to see ST playing like Hayden probably without a care and blasting everybody but I think the good times of 90's are gone forever.

i told u the rahanes shahanes the gaje baje raje and dhwal bawal wont win u the game once the master is gone.....

unfortunately the master is the lone fighter and the rest of the lads are broke in their talent and more so application.

ahoy they r ranji champs yet failed to give a fight. look at royals of rajasthan, the local lads picked up from obscure lands of India and they are # 2 now.

Application helps. And intent to fight. Master's frustated face on his own city's lads said it all. Disgusting for me to see him this way but then thats life. MI is like India of 90s which won when Master fired and lost when he flopped.

obscure hopes for MI. i wud wish the Master hits back few egos and few critics and booing people from Wankhedes (now in their drawing rooms) with some mighty blows from his bat!!!

Better team won and nothing wrong in it.

Balle balle :)

tifosi guy, its not wrong with the captaincy of the great man, but its with the team he has always got. And he is too proud a man to allow things to go on like this. either he is gonna step down or he is now going to inspire them with his own batting...unfortunately his team doesnt have cylinders left to fire....

MI is the most over hyped team after KKR, SRT as captain has never succeeded (got proven history). What was he thinking when he bowled that over ? Another thing is too many changes at once will not help, they seemed lost about their roles in the team. While SRT is around, no one can go against his decision and i think that is what costing them in a big way. So put the ego aside and let someone else lead. As the tournament progress, all the rockstars of indian cricket are coming under hammer. IPL in a way is a good reality check for them.

Sam,

Yeah sure anything ST doess is not wrong. Explain how then MI are playing this bad - sometimes the direction or great inspiration should come from the leader !

Classic case is RR and Warne's captaincy. Easy to see who manages to extract the most from the team he has and who has failed miserably.

Hero worship is one thing - not everything he does needs to be right everytime. Period.

TG, there is a difference here. The Rajasthan royals lads are lesser known players than the famed Mumbai players -- Rahane, Kulkarni and Raje.

the RR players are yet to make the mark in the international arena they are responding to the call to perform by Warne. Same is not being done by Mumbai players including Bhajji.

RR new opener Naman Ojha is relatively unknown player but he has given 2 match winning opening partnerships in last 2 games. he has been playing for plate group team MP which once was as powerful as Mumbai in the Holkar era (1960s)..

Thats the difference. Lesser players are ready to perform, the ranji champs are not. If i m wrong, then the way the tail of MI got dismissed should have been the eye opener.

Captain cant do much if the team shuts its shop and doesnt perform. Yes sachin is failing in batting. when he has clicked MI has won, when he has failed MI has failed

Homer, apologies for using your blog, to clear up things with Sam !

Sam,

You just agreed with me with your first statements ! Tell me or answer me this - one side is a bunch of novices ( so experience wise, pressure wise they are like toddlers), and on the other side are some experienced folks.

I might be missing the point, but I would think the folks with some experience would be easier to take to the next level and much easier to motivate. They've experienced winning and of course would like to feel it again..

Novices on the other hand - well it's just that tough harder. So they look to someone to show them the way.

Easy to see between ST and Warne who does it better.

I rest my case.

This IPL seems to be an abridged version of Sachin's entire cricketing career.
Starts off as a master blaster, winning matches. Team comes to rely too heavily on him. Moves up and down the batting order. Is blamed as a bad captain. Will it continue to him relinquishing captaincy to a born to lead lesser player?

adverbin said...

Homer, wasn't there some criticism of SRT on a few blogs for continuing to open when the middle order needed his genius to stabilise it and push up te scoring rate. And I remember that the absence of Ronchi's "explosive hitting" at the top - like Hayden/Gilchrist etc.- was also criticised. I think SRT has been copping too much of the blame for a few listless performances.

Homer said...

Indophile,

I dont think the batting is the issue. The order is. You dont carry an opener and play him at 8. And what is the point of carrying two keepers.

There is Chaitanya Nanda in the squad, a leggie. If we are playing Raje and Dhawal and not getting them to bowl their entire quota, maybe there is a case for Nanda.

The thinking is screwed here, nothing more nothing less.

Pandya,

I dont think the call to get SRT to bowl was a bad one. He spins the ball both ways and with Duminy and Bhajji exerting the control they did, it was a fair call.

The thinking was right, the execution was at fault. Cant find too many faults with the way SRT led the troops defending 116 either.

The problem methinks, is that there is such heavy dependence on the opening pair that when it does not come off, the rest of the team does not know how to adjust.

Vijay Kumar,

Having lived through the trauma that was the 90s, I would sincerely hope not.

Thanks for your comments and welcome to the blog.

Exactly. Its really as Tendulkar says. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. I guess until a few moves by MS Dhoni backfire, I suppose we'll have to put up with "luck's got nothing to do with it". Tendulkar's is a brilliant cricketing brain, and he is no less than Dhoni there. He makes astute moves. Defending 116, he did a good job. Just that one over and bad execution tilted the scales - on that scale, Dhoni's use of Raina in the 19th over or Gilly's Rohit Sharma over which resulted in a hat trick, might easily have gone wrong on another day. The thinking was the same here. But the results were different. But fundamentaly, all 3 of them made the right moves - Tendul, Gilly and Dhoni. Gilly and Dhoni have luck in addition to competence - Tendul only has competence when it comes to captaincy. So their moves paid off while Tendul's didnt.

When someone says Gilly or Dhoni is lucky, they, atleast I, dont mean that they dont have competence - I just mean that they have luck in addition to competence, which a tendulkar doesnt when it comes to captaincy. Basically, competence+ Luck >> only competence in terms of bringing resuls.

Homer said...

Raj,

The point you forget when you attribute luck to Dhoni's captaincy is this - Dhoni is more situationaly aware than any other Indian skipper I have seen operate.

He also has a pretty good handle on the resources at his disposal

Put these two together and what you have is a skipper who can make more informed decisions.

SRT made some good decisions defending the 116, not so good ones when deciding the batting line up.

And when you make informed decisions, more often than not, they pay off.

Well, Dhoni chose Ashwin and Jakati in the team and didnt give them a over, and lost because of that. Somehow he recovered and realised the problem. So, it happens to everyone. Sachin is quite aware of the team, and situations. The point is not that Dhoni is only luck and nothing else, but Dhoni has competence + luck, a deadly combination. My point is this:
1. If you are competent, and lucky, you'll have great success
2> If you are competent but not lucky, you'll have success but not like 1
3. If you are incompetent and lucky, you might still have more success than 1 & 2
4. if you are incompetent and unlucky, you are screwed
IMO, Dhoni is #1 and Sachin is #2

Then we are in agreement Raj :)
