Can you count to 10?

The draw for the Champions League, scheduled to be held at Lord's on Tuesday, has been postponed after the ICC told organisers that it would violate a contractual obligation. There is a 10-day ban after an ICC event on its members holding any activity at the same venue.

The ICC World Twenty20 ended at Lord's on Sunday with Pakistan beating Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final. And the host agreement between the ICC and the hosts - the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in this case - requires the latter to provide the venue exclusively for a period that begins 21 days prior to the start of an event and until 10 days after.

This is strange.. CL can't have their draw but county matches can go on?

I'd guess that perhaps the CL is being considered "international" in a way that county games aren't, but it does seem a stupid distinction to make.

The article also says that the ICC were happy to allow it 5 days afterwards, but then why allow Trent Bridge to be used after only 4?

Q,

The schedule says so, so it must be.

Jonathan,

When the county game is played, it will be played at the Brit Oval. Likewise, all of the sponsors names will reappear at the different venues.

If the moratorium by the ICC was imposed to prevent ambush marketing, what about this?

I think the ICC is making an ass of itself, again.

Homer, agreed. Thing is, it usually manages to do that without trying to copy FIFA/the IOC...

Seeing as the ICC is usually guided by politics, rather than fairness, common sense or consistency, I wonder whether it is simply trying to distance itself from the Champion's League, especially given the Pakistan exclusion and so on. Having the draw straight after the WT20 would indeed give an appearance of ICC involvement.

Jonathan,

The Champions League is driven by CSA, CA and the BCCI.

The ECB is sending teams for the tourney as is the NZC.

Would the ICC want to cross all these organizations just for a news conference?

This is all speculation, but I can't see that parts of the ICC would want to be seen to be favouring those organisations, either. They have already been bothered by Modi claiming that a window was set aside.

But if it's more than petty fighting, it could be amoney issue. Do you think the ICC like having a tournament involving 5 nations that they don't make any money from? There's no reason to have the draw at Lord's now except for the WT20, and yet there isn't actually a link. I'd guess the ICC would be singing a different tune if some of hte profits were flowing their way...

Jonathan,

I guess its one upmanship.

The ICC can never hope to make money from the Champions League.

What is staggering is that the ICC should quote a rule in its defense that it ( as an organization) did not follow through upon.
