Virender Sehwag is to return home from the World Twenty20 with a shoulder injury, a development that is likely to affect India's chances of retaining the trophy.
Virender Sehwag returning home because of injury - fine.
"A development that is likely to affect India's chances of retaining the Trophy" - how?
Sehwag has yet to master the shortest form of the game. In reality, the longer the format of the game, the better Sehwag is. And his form in the just concluded IPL has been patchy. A couple of good innings but a tendency to play too many shots too early and throwing it away.
Sehwag's replacement is Dinesh Karthik. Karthik has shown form in the IPL and is a wicketkeeper. And given Dhoni's insistence on playing Parthiv Patel for the Chennai Super Kings on account of the fact that he kept wickets, Karthik may turn out to be an inspired selection.
I really dont think Sehwag will be missed - Rohit Sharma looks comfortable at the top of the order and is in form. Also, between Yuvraj, Rohit, Raina and Yususf Pathan, the Indians have enough part time bowlers to fulfil the role Sehwag often did.
"A development that is likely to affect India's chances of retaining the Trophy" - I think not.

Quota system back again in Indian cricket. I thought Sehwag was an opener and Kris has replaced him with a keeper.
Challenged for options ? Not quite. Just a look at Pandey dude and there was a ready replacement.
But Karthik ?
And Sehwag is an inseparable part of Indian setup in all 3 forms of the game. For me his avg in T20 doesnt matter, his starts do. And he was fairly successful in Kiwiland in T20s.
And i believe Rohit Sharma is not a permanent opener :)
Sameer,
Quota system as in one Delhi Daredevil replaced by another ?
Karthik is a keeper and given Dhoni's back issues, he gives India an option. Plus he can open so you have a buffer there. And he has form, as displayed in the IPL.
And Rohit Sharma may not be a permanent opener, but in the outings thus far, he has done nothing to cause a rethink on his batting slot.
Cheers,
Quota system not in IPL, but national selection. DK is Tammi, so is Kris. That way.
Sameer,
If you want to frame the argument that way, Karthik is the only Tamil Nadu player in the squad. And he came in because Sehwag was injured.
I didnt see people making the argument that Kris is anti Tamil when the team was first announced!
Cheers,
Homer,
I dont see logic behind choosing a middle order batsman for an opener. cricketing logic suggests an opener for opener. But if somebody says DK can open in T20, i would rather laugh it off.
This chap has just made a mess of his chances except the England 07 when he had decent success, since then its a downward slide.
And if i apply this logic, then i see his selection is not called for. so only reason i cud think is being from chief selector's state.
Something which also goes for selection of M Vijay for Nagpur in Australia series (when Jaffer was obvious selection) or Balaji for NZ selection when we all knew he is no old Balaji who took Pakistan by storm.
just my take on it. Differences are inevitable.
Homer, do you recognise sameer? :-)
Sameer,
By your logic, RP Singh should not be playing either. After all, it was his performance in the IPL that paved the way for his return to the team.
Dinesh Karthik gives India options - with the gloves, with the bat and offers an alternate at the opening slot.
And even if he is not slotted for the openers slot, there are atleast 3 other batsmen who can step up for that job.
Make a cricketing argument why Karthik should not be playing in Indian colors - innuendo about him being from the Chief Selector' state is self defeating, especially when you juxtapose it against the fact that there was no TN player when the initial squad of XV was announced.
Cheers,
Yes Raj... :)
Cheers,
In last 2 years DK's record reads in T20s :
unfiltered 6 67 31* 16.75 0 - - - - 3 2 Profile
filtered 1 8 8 8.00
1 game and 8 runs. 6 games and 67 runs. laughable. 31* is his only notable contribution in the first T20 India played and won against SA.
ODIs
unfiltered 26 330 63 22.00 0 - - - - 23 2 Profile
filtered 1 0 0 0.00
0 runs in 1 game in last 2 years. 330 runs in 26 games.
Tests
unfiltered 22 973 129 28.61 1 - - - - 47 5 Profile
filtered 6 157 52 14.27 0 - - - - 8 1
157 runs in 6 Tests in 2 years.
the above stats are after England 2007.
Do this figures guarantee a place in NATIONAL TEAM for a world championship.
I guess not.
Sameer,
But 12 matches,11 innings, 223 runs with a highest of 68 at an average of 20.27 merits Sehwag a spot in the T20 side.
And 1 over for 20 runs seals his spot as an all rounder!
Cheers,
yeah very much. His reputation, his record very much makes him feared batsman in T20.
thats other thing, you know it and dont want to accept it.
no hassles.
i rest my case with figures and facts.
Homer, waste of time. Forget TN, the whole of South India has but one representative in the national team before Karthik was selected. And that one man, Ojha, is not native South Indian. Home bias, indeed, by Srikkanth. And you know, what India has only one selector not 5.
Calling that regional bias is what not havint regional bias is all about, you know.
Maybe I should start flaunting the fact that I dont discriminate between intl cricketing sides(except Oz maybe) and support WI, SL, Pak, SA etc and call myself not having "national bias" like our friend has been going about adverstising that he doesnt have regional bias. Yet he never fails to vent bile at Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc. Dont know what makes him think holier-than-thou. Well, there is one clue. He supports Ponting's team. Maybe, holier-than-thou is a mindset ingrained in Ponting supporters :-)
Right Sameer, so "His reputation, his record very much makes him feared batsman in T20." but Karthiks form in the IPL, leading upto the World Cup is to be discounted. And let us also forget the fact that Karthik keeps wickets.
Brilliant argument - pick and choose bits and parts that accentuate your argument while totally ignoring everything else.
"i rest my case with figures and facts." and "thats other thing, you know it and dont want to accept it." - does the phrase "My way or the highway" ring a bell?
Cheers,
lol Raj :)
Cheers,
Will the team miss Sehwag off the field? As vice captain he must be in the think tank. Not sure, how much of an influence his personality was on the team.
Who is Dhoni's deputy now? Yuvraj?
If they wanted a wicketkeeper/opener they might have flirted with Naman Ojha. Now that Rohit Sharma has fitted nicely into the opener's slot they are looking for a wicketkeeping allrounder in my opinion. Karthik, despite inconsistency , is a good fit. He married a Mumbai gal I think. Will that exonerate him?
Vijay Kumar,
Mrs Karthik a Mumbaikar?
Cheers,
Homer - looking at all these comments - all I can say is you do have patience dealing with all these "True Indians" :).
Raj and Homer,
If IPL was an yardstick for selection then Naman Ojha was the answer. A keeper plus an aggressive opener. Only thing goes against him is he plays for a plate Ranji Team MP :)
He is a keeper -- backup to Dhoni, a opener -- replacement to Viru.
Only thing was he didnt have patrons in the selection committee xcept Heeru who couldnt press his case hard.
And Homer, i dont have that rich vocab of phrases, so that phrase didnt ring in my ears. but i noted it n wud use sometime :P
Are Raj, I spoke of Naman Ojha, he is not even Southie nor a Mumbaikar, he hails from relatively silent state of MP which incidentally gave India its first TEST captain. May be you were speaking of Pragyan Ojha. So many Ojhas you see.
Vijay points an interesting argument in Karthik's favor that his wife Nikita is a Mumbaikar. Mumbai.
Fun apart, if selectors had large eyes they could have made the man from my home town happy and me happy too. and then i would have pitched in shamelessly for NO.
Cheers Naresh :)
Sameer,
IPL was the criteria for selecting RP Singh - immediate form matters. And till your comment, no one had made a case for Naman Ojha.
8 matches for 168 runs with 2 fifties at 24 versus Karthiks 288 in 15 matches at 36 with 1 fifty.
And India's first Test captain played for India, Andhra, Central India, Central Provinces and Berar, Hindus, Holkar, Hyderabad (India), Rajputana and United Province - not MP!
Cheers,
Naman ojha ahead of karthik? Homer, clearly, our man wants karthik out because well he wants him out. Pontingan philosophy?
Raj,
Pontingan? Did the Prick start his own stream of philosophical thought ? :)
Cheers,
CK Naidu hailed from a city thats a part of MP, present day MP. Facts overturned to make your FIP philosophy get an edge. Koi na. You say Holkar right. Just google their history in Ranji trophy. you wud get my drift. if you want to.
Raj, i bloody well want DK out. :)
Between Naman Ojha and DK, why would anyone choose the former for a world cup tournament? I would go for experience. And even if experience wasnt the criteria, DK is a much better batsman than Ojha. DK can bat in the middle order as well. The player who was in good touch in the IPL was picked. If Uthappa had been in good touch in the IPL, maybe the selectors would have gone for him. He is an opener, and kept wickets too for BRC. But he was pathetic. So I think the selection was not prejudiced. Naman Ojha, well, he has some way to go before he can do duty for India.
Sameer,
CK Nayadu captained the team in 1932. Present day MP came into existence much later.
If you dont believe me, check out this link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._K._Nayudu
"Facts overturned to make your FIP philosophy get an edge" - A little knowledge is a dangerous thing my friend.
Cheers,
I agree K.
Thanks for your comments and welcome to the blog :).
Cheers,
I am the guy who made the post based on which the Balls in arms guy-whose name i just figured out is Sameer-wants "to sue you".
It was initially perplexing why the joker posts arbit'ly,and I now figure out that most of the time, his 'new posts' are replies to your posts here. The joker is basically a reactionary.
A while later,Balls in arms made a post of his own actually full of twisted facts out there supporting N.Ojha. That one disappeared after I made a comment on the yellow bloggism the blogger made. :p .
In that, after some 5-6 points of trashing balls in arms for the currently non-existent post,I ended with a statement that something to the effect of 'do not let the hatred for a state blind your views'.
Now the ball-less one makes it a new taaza khabar type "POV just got abusive. Quota turned to a supposed hatred for a state.",with no reference to the original post.
I think he did the same thing quoting Raj's comment from some other blog.
I am sure balls in arms will get around here looking for some 'nayi topic'.But if he still believes his balls are not misplaced,he should stop blogging or start blogging about religion,or about i dont know fucken what.
Agree with Homer on the flexibility DK provides.
Had given my take on this some time back at
http://lateinswing.blogspot.com/2009/05/no-two-ways-of-doing-it.html
Cheers
Well, Homer, I give up. I am fine with blind hatred for a particular player - we all have it, don't we? ;-) (me for Dhoni, you for Badri - just kidding, mate!). But what perplexes me is the permanent victim status, and the bile thrown at other bloggers for no reason other than the other bloggers expressing their opinion. And the "I am so unbiased mode". Times like these are when I am forced to theorise that our Pricky did, indeed, start his own school of philosophy.
Anonymous was Hilarious.
Thanks for clarifying that Anonymous.
Thanks for your comments and welcome to the blog.
Cheers,
Thanks for the link Late Inswing. Wonderfully written post.
Thanks for your comments and welcome to the blog.
Cheers,
Raj,
Self righteous indignation coupled with a holier than thou attitude - The Prick's way of doing things.
Cheers,
Scary, Homer. As if one Pricky is not enough, Pricky is training a whole army of Pricky followers across the world. What is he upto?
Raj,
Its a cult... And they believe in reverse reverse psycho babble - scary!
Cheers,
Balls in arm closed comments on this issue on his blog!!! Hahahaha
I guess he finally checked Cricinfo and found out that Prasanna and Chandra aren't from TN and couldn't own up to his ignorance....
I wont bet on that Prabu :)
