Homer, thanks for the link! (BTW, you should take off the #links in the URL above - it takes you down to the bottom of the page)

But on the business of pitches, I was staggered to see everyone talking about the expected low scores, how difficult it would be and so on, but all in an admiring tone of voice. Unfreakingbelievable.

Samir,

Oops !! Sorry about the #links!

About the pitches, the onus is on Chris Broad and the ICC - are they going to maintain different standards for different teams or will they apply the same set of rules across the board.

The double standards must be rectified but this pitch is hardly a green top.

Not sure what Broad can do even if he wanted to.

I was in Kanpur where India played England and Duckworth-Lewis beat Cricket in fading lights. There I had a chat with Shiv Kumar, the curator there, who had made the pitch when India won that Test inside three days against a hapless South Africa.

Kumar said it was not that bad a pitch and only Dravid's dismissal in that Test could be blamed on the track. According to him, rest had themselves to blame for their dismissal, he said.

I thought Green Park traditionally offered low bounce but a senior journo told me here Marshall had knocked Gavaskar's bat off his hand. But things gradually changed and Kumar said because of its vicinity to a river, Green Park would never be a fast bowlers' delight.

I quite liked this pitch at least it was not dangerous... and a welcome change... either way, heavy rains to the rescue.

Mate

Neat blog! Like your writing style. Btw are you the same guy who comments also at ' Smoke Signals' the blog run by Prem Panicker?

RGB,

More wickets fell at Brisbane for less runs, compared to Kanpur..

And yet, Roshan Mahanama, the matvh referee found it necessary to find fault with the Green Park wicket and the ICC found time to censure the BCCI over this.

The ICC has written regulations on pitch behavior - did Brisbane comply to these norms?

If not, why is the ICC dawdling over this?

Thanks for that insight Som.. Deeply appreciated .

Scorpi,

Too many batsmen have been pampered for too long - and the ICC has taken lead in this mollycoddling.

Homer,

The pitch is judged on how it behaves and not on wicket per runs ratio.

The guidelines are farcical. I am amazed Asian countries agreed to them.

But if we accept those guidelines, Mahanama was within his rights to report the Kanpur pitch as poor. The pitch did offer excessive turn to spinners early in the match.

In Brisbane , batting was inept. The pitch did not offer excessive seam movement.

someone's dad,

Thanks for your kind words and welcome to the blog.

I have an opinion, one that is shaped by what I know.

I am a Mumbaikar, have grown up with the team and am fanatical about it, and I am unapologetic about it :).

Other opinions - I look at the blog as an ideas exchange forum -I have a point of view, others have a whole different take on the same issue. By exchanging ideas, I can form a more well rounded view of the topic at hand.
