I am not convinced about the feasibility of this move. I would rather they have someone like Dhoni as the floater, or Sehwag.
Here is an idea - Limit Sehwag's presence to the last 10 overs of the innings. Given his penchant to play shots and given his propensity to get out quickly, will it make sense for Sehwag to come in only when the last 10 overs are underway ( irrespective or wickets lost)?
Of course a 100/6 in 30 overs basically puts to rest the above para!!!
Here's another - Dhoni has this propensity of holing out in the deep when the heat is on and the match is hanging in the balance. What he needs is someone senior at the other end to guide him- thus tempering his stroke play and bringing a modicum of judiciousness in his shot selection. On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh has been there and done that for India. Will it make sense for these two to swap positions and roles?
Dravid at 5 provides the ballast for the team. While it is laudable that he has put his hand up to play anywhere in the order, I am not too keen to see him anywhere but 5.

This is the problem with having too many options- while good on paper, it is hard ( and often very confusing) to get it right every time because of the uncertainty created by the choices.
PS:- Here is a scenario I would like to see play out against the West Indies- Windies 250/8 in their 50 overs India 202/7 in 43 overs. Dhoni and Agarkar at the crease. Harbhajan and Zaheer to follow.

Very true. Dravid and Sachin are two guys whom you look up to when things go wrong. Dravid position is definitely at number 5. He can be the wall, rotate strike and play the role of the finisher as well. Dhoni, Sehwag and even Pathan (if he gets to play) can be used as floaters depending on situations. But going by the recent matches, it seems that Sehwag is set to open (but with the Dravid-Chappell combo, one never knows)... The plan should also look to utilise the prowess of Yuvraj and Dhoni in every game.

The Black caps have Jeeten Patel and Danny Vettori and a whole load of dibblers and dobblers, so they could just spring in a surprise.

the need for a floater will occur more in the second round of the cup and by then you have the wherewithall to judge the form of different players. Dravit as a floater is not such a bad idea afterall as he takes the least time to settle down and has the maturity to play to the situation. Please leave Sehwag alone as he is still trying to find his form and needs support and emphathy and not running down. On a given day he can be the wrecker in chief. If he doesn't click, Robin Uttappa is always ther to fill in

We are none the wiser today than we were 4 weeks ago when the team was selected for the World Cup.
The same questions still remain unanswered.
Dravid at 5 brings his experience to guide a potentially explosive but equally combustible lower middle order and he has the ability to shepard the tail.
Plus with having both Sachin and Saurav at the top of the order, aren't we risking having a top heavy batting lineup with most of the experience concentrated up front?
there seems to be a worldwide acceptance over dravid at 4 or 5 - except of course, in the indian dressing room. And it's not a new suggestion anyways - that's the position from where Dravid revived his fledgling odi career..i don't know why he even thinks of changing it.
